Liverpool sign Maxi Rodriguez on loan

Rafa Benitez has signed long-term target Maxi Rodriguez from Atletico Madrid.

Check this wikipedia link for the same
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxi_Rodr%C3%ADguez

The Reds boss was linked with a swoop for the winger back in 2008 but has now secured a deal to bring him to Anfield on a short-term loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

The deal is perfect for cash-strapped Liverpool as Rodriguez, out of favour at Atletico, is out of contract in the summer and would not command a fee.

The 35-times capped midfielder, who has hit 30 goals in 107 appearances for Atletico, is desperate for first-team football to secure his place in Argentina’s World Cup squad.

Liverpool fans will remember Rodriguez scoring a well-crafted goal for Atletico in the group stages of the Champions League last season (picture above shows him celebrating) at Anfield in a game that ended 1-1.

Reports this week have linked left back Andrea Dossena with a move in the opposite direction so the two moves could well be linked.

Big injury blow for Liverpool

Glen Johnson's worst injury fears were confirmed today when scans confirmed he suffered a medial ligament injury to his right knee during the 1-0 win at Aston Villa.

The England defender limped off in the latter stages of the game at Villa Park and assessments by the club's medical team at Melwood today have revealed the latest blow to the Reds' £18m summer signing, who has already missed several games this season with hamstring trouble following his arrival from Portsmouth.

A club spokesman said: "A scan today has revealed a tear in the medial ligament in Glen's right knee.

"The player will see a specialist tomorrow, after which we should be able to more accurately determine the length of his rehabilitation period."

Liverpool eye highly rated spanish defender

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is preparing a January move for Spanish defender Ivan Gonzalez.

The Malaga centre half has only recently broken into the first team at the La Liga side, making only five senior appearances for the club this season.

That doesn't appear to be an issue for the Liverpool boss, and the Spaniard has a track record of returning to his homeland in the transfer windows to strengthen his side.

The Reds are in the middle of an almighty scrap to make fourth place and thus qualify for the Champions League, and the addition of a young centre back could make the difference in the Premier League.

A 21-year-old with a bright future, Gonzalez is tipped to be a future full international for the Spanish side, and The Sun reports that Liverpool are ready to make a move in the New Year.

With transfer funds limited at Anfield, the probable sale of Andrea Dossena would create funds for a move from the Merseyside club.

Competition could come from Hull City, but Benitez has the Spanish connection and the Reds must be favourites to land the player if a bidding war begins.

New stadium work to begin in new year

Liverpool’s new Anfield stadium will begin in April.

Councillor Warren Bradley told the Liverpool Echo and Radio City that he has been told by the club they hope to make progress on the new stadium in the first quarter of 2010.

Plans to build a new 60,000 seater stadium on Stanley Park have stalled under owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett and has been a major gripe among Liverpool fans angry at the duo’s running of the club.

Cllr Bradley told the Echo newspaper: “Liverpool FC’s Christian Purslow has told us that the club in the first quarter of next year should be able to move forward with the stadium.

“We have told them it’s time to move on now, it’s gone on too long.

“I honestly believe Christian Purslow has been open and honest with us. Hopefully in the first quarter of next year we will see some movement. Without doubt it’s not before time.”

Financing of the new stadium, which is estimated to cost around £400m when complete, has been a major issue for Hicks and Gillett and it is widely reported they have been seeking investment from outside the club to help fund the stadium.

Recently Purslow, the club’s managing director, provided assurances the stadium will be complete by 2018 should England win the bid to host the World Cup.

Gerrard hails El-Nino as world's best

Steven Gerrard hailed Fernando Torres as "the best striker in the world" after the Spaniard became the fastest player in Liverpool's history to score 50 top-flight league goals when he struck an injury-time winner to break Aston Villa hearts.

A largely uninspiring match was heading for stalemate when mistakes and misfortune in the Villa defence conspired to give Torres a free run on goal in the 93rd minute. His finish was ruthless, the forward sweeping the ball across Brad Friedel to revive Liverpool's hopes of securing a top-four place and etch his name in the Anfield record books.

The 24-year-old has reached a half-century of top-flight goals in 72 appearances, six matches quicker than Roger Hunt. He also leaves an illustrious list of Liverpool forwards trailing in his wake, with Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen requiring 84, 88 and 98 games respectively to hit the same landmark.

"You have to keep going to the end," said Gerrard. "And when you have players like this [Torres] on the team you know there's always a chance to snatch it. Everyone knows when he's on form he's the best in the world. We want him for many more years. We need his goals to drive us into the top four."

Torres strikes last-gasp winner for Liverpool

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres scored an injury-time 50th Premier League goal, to make him the fastest player in the club's history to reach that mark and give his side a Champions League lifeline with a 1-0 win against Aston Villa.

Reds' goalkeeper Pepe Reina had been the hero after stopping Stewart Downing with a brilliant reflex stop and then Gabriel Agbonlahor saw his effort blocked by Reina's legs. Both sides then had more good chances to break the deadlock, but Torres then latched onto a ball following a mistake from Stephen Warnock and drilled a low shot across Brad Friedel in the 93rd minute.

It means Rafael Benitez's side are only two points behind Villa and three adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham in the race for European places.

Liverpool interested in turkish winger

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez will hope to snap up Galatasaray winger Arda Turan after the Turkey midfielder revealed he wants to move to Anfield.

The 22-year-old is reported to be a target of Arsenal but is only interested in one Premier League team.
He said: 'When I've finished my business at Galatasaray, I will be happy to move on.
'I most want to play at Liverpool because of the culture of the club and the fans.'
Benitez will offload at least three players to fund the £10m move for Turan, with Ryan Babel, Andrea Dossena and Andriy Voronin all set to be shown the exit door next month.
Turan has scored 55 League goals in 88 appearances for Galatasaray and has five in 34 starts for Turkey.

Liverpool looking for Pandev on free transfer

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has turned to Lazio want-away striker Goran Pandev to boost the Reds' season, according to The People.

26 year-old Pandev has finally had a long running legal battle with Lazio resolved and has been released from his contract. The Macedonian striker joined Lazio in 2004 and has been a regular goalscorer in Serie A. However, he has not played this season and is reportedly on his way out of Rome, having been branded a "rebel" by club president Claudio Lotito.

Pandev has over 50 international caps to his name and the prospect of securing him on a free transfer has made him a top priority for Benitez. The Liverpool boss has reportedly urged managing director Christian Purslow to find the cash to finance a deal with the striker wanting around £95,000-a week.

Benitez is well aware that he will need to sell players in order to finance additions to his Liverpool squad. Several players appear to be in line for an Anfield exit, including Dutch attacker Ryan Babel , Ukrainian forward Andriy Voronin and Italian defender Andrea Dossena who is reported to be on the verge of a deal to join Roma.

Liverpool see off ten man Wolves

Liverpool scrambled their way to a much-needed 2-0 win over Wolves as the pressure lifted from the club.

But it was never going to be simple against an organised Wolves side, with the points only being secured after the Midlanders were reduced to ten men when defender Stephen Ward was sent-off.

Even that was a bizarre decision, with referee Andre Marriner at first getting the wrong man, booking Christophe Berra before his error was pointed out by a pack of Liverpool players who made sure that Ward was punished for a second bookable offence.

From that point Liverpool took over, and goals from Steven Gerrard - only his fifth of the season - and a deflected Yossi Benayoun effort gave them victory.

Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani was finally included in a Liverpool league starting line-up, his previous apperances having been from the bench.

The £20m international had recovered from a calf injury, with Liverpool also recalling Fabio Aurelio and Benayoun.

Javier Mascherano was suspended, while Dirk Kuyt was rested on the bench with Andrea Dossena dropped from the match day squad.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy, who controversially made ten changes from his team at Manchester United last month, this time fielded an unchanged team from the one that beat Burnley last weekend to vindicate that Old Trafford decision.

More through luck than design, this was Liverpool's most attacking line-up in ages with Benayoun wide, Aquilani providing neat touches from midfield and only Lucas Leiva as a holding player.

After the abject defeat at Portsmouth last weekend, Liverpool needed to do something to restore any level of belief in their fans.

And they started well with Aurelio's free-kick testing Marcus Hahnemann, before Glen Johnson chipped wide of the far post.

Steven Gerrard had a go from 20 yards and Fernando Torres, only eight yards out, kept the American goalkeeper on his toes.

But Wolves, growing in confidence now in the top flight, are organised, compact and resolute. And they slowly imposed themselves on a game that became increasingly difficult for Liverpool.

On the break Wolves were always dangerous. Jose Reina needed to be alert to keep out a shot on the turn from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and had to touch over a Nenad Milijas free-kick.

Anxiety is never far from Liverpool's defence these days, and Kevin Doyle's header wide from a corner and a 20-yarder from Milijas had the hosts worried.

Wolves could sense the unease, and Liverpool were failing to keep possession as they tried to put together quick-passing moves.

Hahnemann saved well when Johnson found space in the box for a low drive, but generally Liverpool struggled desperately to create significant openings.

Liverpool started the second period with greater resolve and one decent passing movement created space for Gerrard to let fly, Hahnemann saving to his left.

Then six minutes into the half came the key moment in the match when referee Marriner got himself into a terrible mess after a second foul in quick succession by Ward.

Firstly he was booked for pulling back Benayoun after 48 minutes, then three minutes later he hauled down Lucas.

But the West Midlands official initially booked Berra for that second offence before a posse of Liverpool players persuaded him to consult a linesman, who pointed out the error.

Reina was booed from then on by the Wolves fans for racing 80 yards to get involved in the debate.

Ward was eventually called forward and shown a second yellow card and a red, putting Wolves down to ten men.

And it did not take Liverpool to take the lead. It came after 62 minutes when Emiliano Insua got down the left to cross for Gerrard to climb above Milijas and head powerfully past Hahnemann.

The Serbian was replaced before the restart, Michael Mancienne coming on to further re-enforce Wolves' defence, with striker Chris Iwelumo replacing Ebanks-Blake.

But the balance had swung now to Liverpool, and even a home side still way short of their best were not going to waste this opportunity for a much-needed win.

Benayoun settled the issue with a deflected drive off Karl Henry for the second after 70 minutes.

Kuyt came on for Aurelio with 14 minutes left, with teenager Daniel Pacheco replacing a tiring Aquilani after 84 minutes.

Jay Spearing then took over from Benayoun, a relieved Liverpool having secured a much-needed victory.

Rafa back to defending Aqulani signing

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has again defended his signing of former Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani.

The Italian midfielder, 25, has made just three brief appearances as a sub in the league and a couple more in the Champions League - and that was Liverpool's hopes of qualifying had already perished.

But Benitez predicted Aquilani would come into his own while Javier Mascherano serves a four-match ban.

Benitez said "We know Aquilani is a big signing but we also knew we had to try to protect him.

"When we signed him we got three different opinions from doctors and the worst-case scenario was two months out, more or less.

"He wants to play in every game but he didn't have the match fitness. But with Mascherano out, maybe he will have the opportunities."

Benitez thrashes Torres surgery rumours

Rafael Benitez insists Liverpool have no intention of sending Fernando Torres for an operation on his hernia problem.

The Anfield chief has reacted to suggestions Spain would like their star striker to have an operation now rather than risk a further breakdown that could affect his chances of playing in the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Torres has played two full matches since his return from extensive treatment but along with skipper Steven Gerrard, has not looked at his best.

But the striker is expected to lead the attack again on Boxing Day with Benitez hoping Gerrard and Torres will soon find their true form. And Benitez has again refuted claims Torres will need an operation.

Benitez said: "An operation is not in our minds, I was surprised to hear such suggestions from Spain because we have a good working relationship with their medical team. We will continue to manage Torres' problem and assess him on a game-to-game basis."

Liverpool to enquire about Heskey

Rafael Benítez has placed Emile Heskey top of his wish list for January despite facing a monumental task to persuade Aston Villa to grant the striker a return to Liverpool.

An experienced yet inexpensive forward is the transfer priority for the Liverpool manager next month as he attempts to revive the club's season and improve cover for Fernando Torres, who has not fully recovered from a hernia despite resting the problem for five weeks. Benítez wanted to bring Heskey back to Anfield in January this year before being priced out of it by Villa's £3.5m offer to Wigan.

The Liverpool manager remains keen on the England international, who turns 32 in January, and is prepared to test Martin O'Neill's resolve with an offer during the transfer window despite his prospects of success appearing minimal.

Not only is Benítez operating on limited resources at Liverpool, with his budget more likely to be shaped by any departures of such players as Ryan Babel, Andriy Voronin, Andrea Dossena and Philipp Degen, but Heskey's situation at Villa Park has improved dramatically since struggling to hold down a regular place in O'Neill's side at the start of this season.

The forward has alternated with John Carew during Villa's impressive rise, and scored three times in his last seven appearances. Heskey's lasting affection for Liverpool, where he spent four seasons under their former manager Gérard Houllier, may encourage Benítez but there is also the added complication of his fraught relationship with O'Neill.

The pair fell out spectacularly during the Gareth Barry saga in 2008 and, having missed out on Champions League qualification last season, it would be a major surprise if O'Neill weakened his squad for the benefit of a Premier League rival.

Saudi Prince to visit Anfield again

The Prince of Saudi Arabia has revealed that he will be attending Liverpool's Boxing Day clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers, as he bids to acquire a 50% stake in the club.

Prince Faisal bin Fahad bin Abdullah revealed on Saudi television that he will be attending the Reds' early-evening clash at Anfield on Saturday as a guest of current owner George Gillett.

Prince Faisal attended Liverpool's win over Hull City in September with Gillett to rubber-stamp a deal to build club-accredited academies in the Middle East.

However reports in Saudi Arabia suggest that he is now planning to broker a deal with the American for the sale of his Anfield shares.

Despite pocketing $300 million (£1.87m) from his sale of Canadian ice hockey franchise, the Montreal Canadiens, Gillett has been reportedly looking for a swift exit from Liverpool with bin Abdullah's sports investment group F6 expected to offer him a lifeline out of his Anfield nightmare.

Both he and business partner Tom Hicks have incurred the wrath of supporters after saddling the Reds with hundreds of millions of debt and reportedly ordering manager Rafael Benitez to salvage the Premier League outfit's season on a reduced tranfer budget as they try to make repayments on the club's loans.

Torres expects crisis to worsen due to money concerns

Fernando Torres has admitted Liverpool’s crisis-hit season will get worse – because they cannot afford to buy new players in the January transfer window.

The Spain striker has struggled with injury all season, and as a result Liverpool have failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League and slipped to eighth in the Premier League.

And with the club’s American owners under pressure to cut their £240m debt, boss Rafa Benitez will have to wheel and deal in the transfer window, as revealed in yesterday’s Star.

Torres, who has just been named in FIFA’s world XI, said: “Obviously we need players. If we can bring quality players it should be really positive for us, but I think the situation is really difficult because I think we don’t have money to bring in the best players.

“Every top team in the world goes through a bad situation like Liverpool now. Like every top team, Liverpool will get over it.

“We were playing really well last season with the same team. We have to just recover the mentality and everything will be different.”

Benitez’s position has come under some scrutiny even though it is thought his job is safe until the end of the season.

Torres added: “I think sacking the manager is not a solution.

‘‘The manager is not playing so we have to be positive with him. We are the main reason.’’

Rafa furious after losing to Pompey

Liverpool FC manager Rafa Benitez offered a bizarre response to defeat at Portsmouth by repeating referee Lee Mason had a "perfect" game at Fratton Park.

After losing 2-0 through goals by Nadir Belhadj and Frederic Piquionne, Benitez’s reaction had the hallmarks of his rant against Sir Alex Ferguson at the start of the year when he continually spoke of "facts".

This time he used the word "perfect" six times to describe Mason, who dismissed Javier Mascherano just before the hour mark for a foul on Pompey centre-back Tal Ben Haim.

Benitez has history with Mason after the Lancashire official dismissed two Liverpool FC players during a defeat to Fulham in October.

Benitez said: "I have seen the replay and for me it is not a sending off but anyway, the referee was perfect, he didn’t make any mistake.

"Now Javier is injured and I will say again the referee didn’t make any mistakes. He was perfect. I have seen the replay, for me it is not a sending off, but anyway, perfect."

Benitez had Fernando Torres back in the team after resting him in midweek but the Spain striker failed to make an impact and in the second half appeared to aim an elbow at Ben Haim.

"The referee was perfect so Torres didn’t have any problems," Benitez said.

Belhadj opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, then Piquionne added the second eight minutes before the final whistle.

"When we lose it’s always disappointing," Benitez said. "But the first half we had plenty of possession and we were controlling the game.

"Then we conceded a goal after making a mistake and after the sending off changed the game."

Torres committed to Reds regardless of Rafa's future

Fernando Torres insists he would stay with Liverpool even if Rafa Benitez was to leave.

Reports have linked Torres with a move away from Liverpool but he has reiterated his commitment to the club.

The 25-year-old insists he will stay regardless of what happens with Benitez, although he would like to work under his current boss for as long as possible.

"I still have four years left on my contract and my future is here," he said.

"It's not linked to Rafa's, but I hope that we can see out our contracts here together.

"Right now I don't see myself playing elsewhere.

"Now I just want to improve the side's current standing and hopefully we'll all remain here together."

Purslow assures over new stadium

Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow has assured England’s 2018 World Cup Campaign team that the New Anfield Stadium will be completed in time to host matches if England’s bid is succesful.

Purslow intervened when the city of Liverpool was, reportedly, almost rejected as a potential host city when the cities were announced yesterday.

Purslow met with the chairman of the bid team, Lord Mawhinney, and provided assurances that the new Anfield will be ready.

Peter Shaw, Liverpool’s assistant executive director said “Our plans remain exactly the same, our intention is to build a new stadium. The financial markets need to be right for the club to move forward on the stadium and in the new year maybe that will happen. A stadium is needed and that stadium will be the new Anfield.”

UAE royal family interested in investing in Liverpool

United Arab Emirates' ruling family set to buy into cash-strapped Liverpool.

Liverpool could be set for a badly-needed cash boost from the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates.

According to reports from the Middle East, members of the Ras al-Khaimah family are seeking talks with the club's owners to discuss possible investments.

They want American co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks to fly to the UAE to open negotiations about buying into the ailing club.

A senior official close to the Ras al-Khaimahs said representatives from Liverpool "may be coming next week".

Ian Cotton, Liverpool's director of communications, refused to be drawn on the reports, saying: "At the moment, we are not commenting on this speculation."

Liverpool would welcome investment as the club's borrowings stand at £313m.

Just last week manager Rafa Benitez had said that managing the club's huge debts was proving to be difficult.

Hicks and Gillett have been courting investment from the Middle East for months and Gillett recently visited Saudi Arabia.

Ras al-Khaimah's royal family is the latest Gulf investor to be linked with Liverpool and in September, Saudi Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Al Saud was said to be keen to invest, but nothing came of the interest.

Liverpool interested in West Ham midfielder

Rafa Benitez is looking for some creativity in the midfield where Liverpool have been lacking. So to fill that void, Rafa is interested in the West Ham ace who has earlier received interest from City as well.

"Rafa Benitez will try to exploit the uncertainty over West Ham's future by making a swoop for Scott Parker ," according to a report in The Sun this morning.

Andrew Dillon writes: "Liverpool are ready with a £6million offer for the midfielder when the transfer window opens next month. Kop boss Benitez is gambling the debt-crippled Londoners may be forced to cash in, especially if they reject David Gold and David Sullivan's takeover bid."

The Sun journalist speculates that Parker would be a good replacement for Javier Mascherano who is set to join Barcelona in the summer.

Parker was voted West Ham’s player of the season at the end of 2008/2009 and despite the Hammers struggling this campaign has performed well.

The 29-year-old midfielder was close to joining Manchester City last January and in 2009/2010 has made 14 appearances, providing two assists. Parker is contracted to West Ham until the end of the 2012/2013 season and earns over £50,000 a week.

Gerrard admits liverpool have underperformed

STEVEN GERRARD has challenged his team-mates to join him in the trenches to revive Liverpool’s faltering season.

After being dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage, Anfield legend Graeme Souness said the club could be heading for financial meltdown.

But in a defiant message, Gerrard says the players will be going all-out to make the ex-Kop boss eat his words.

Talking after seeing his side beaten by Fiorentina on Wednesday night, Gerrard said: “As captain I have got to make sure that a meltdown doesn’t happen.

“And that starts now with all the players taking responsibility.

“It’s all right looking at why it’s happening. We need to put it right on the pitch as players. It hurts and it’s difficult looking at the league table and seeing Liverpool as low as seventh.

“Especially after finishing second last season. Although we missed out it was still a real confidence booster and gave us a big belief going into the season that we could fight all the way.”

Huyton born Gerrard, who grew up watching the great team built around Kenny Dalglish and Souey in the 80s, has no doubts that boss Rafa Benitez has the squad to kick on and fight back.

He said: “Unfortunately we have found ourselves outside the top four positions. And we need to put that right. We’re up for the challenge. There’s no time now for hiding.

“We need to get out there and get on with it. “We are the players responsible for where we are in the league so we’re the ones who need to get it right.”

That starts today with another crucial clash to save Liverpool’s season, this time against another top four challenger, Arsenal.

The importance isn’t lost on Gerrard. Then again it never is as he speaks passionately from a heart which has been broken by Champions League expulsion.

He added: “It goes without saying that it’s a massive game, especially with our league position and because of the start to the season we have had.

“Every game now is a cup final. We need to try to get back into a top-four position as soon as possible. That’s
the No.1 priority of the club right now.

“At the beginning of the season we had the intention of being in the title race from start to finish.

“Unfortunately we have had a bad start.

“The idea now is to get people fit, get back to full strength and start moving up the league. I’m confident we can do that if we get everyone back fit.”

Overcoming Cesc Fabregas and company will be no easy task, as Gerrard is quick to acknowledge.

“It’s very difficult playing against Arsenal,” he said.

“They’re one of the best teams in Europe at passing the ball very quickly and moving the ball about. We have to get about them and try to force them into mistakes.

“If you stand off they will kill you. So starting against Arsenal, we have to roll our sleeves up and get this football club back to where it belongs. And that’s as far up the league as possible.”

The current plight of Liverpool is obviously something Gerrard finds hard to swallow. But he definitely doesn’t
want anyone shaking their heads in bewilderment about being out of the Champions League and a top-four berth.

Gerrard added: “It’s not puzzling why we’re in this position. The league never lies.

“We are in this position for a reason – we haven’t been good enough or consistent enough.

“It was a sickener losing against Fiorentina because I thought we gave a good account of ourselves and were unfortunate to lose the game.

“Let’s be fair, though, it wasn’t a massive game.

“It was all about the preparation for Arsenal.

“Alberto Aquilani got some minutes on the pitch and Fernando Torres returned.

“So there were a lot of positives to be taken from the match, too.

Masch admits Liverpool can't have any more excuses

avier Mascherano has told Liverpool that the time for excuses is over, as their season enters a critical stage.

The Anfield midfielder believes that he and his team-mates must start doing their talking on the pitch, after a disastrous start to the campaign, which has seen them crash out of the Champions' League, and effectively out of the title race.

The Reds face Arsenal tomorrow, knowing that defeat could leave them with a real struggle to even make the top four, and qualify for the competition which is vital to the club's finances.

Everyone at Anfield is aware of the implications of missing out on the Champions' League, and Mascherano believes that the players now have to stand up and be counted, as they put the mistakes of the past months right.

Fernando Torres has admitted this week that performances so far simply haven't been good enough, and the Argentine midfielder echoed that sentiment when he insisted they now have to make a fresh start, with a totally different attitude.

"The season starts again for us now. Obviously everyone would have liked to have started it in a different way, but we can't change anything about that," Mascherano explained.

"What we can do is change it from now and into the future - and we will try to start this weekend. Beating Arsenal is a great chance for us and would be a great way to start. It would be a big statement from us for the rest of the season.

"Really, we don't need to talk too much, we need to prove it on the pitch. We could talk for days and days about what we've done before, but this season we have to start doing it again with no excuses."

Mascherano has endured his own problems with form and fitness during the opening months of the campaign, as interest from Barcelona and pressures from captaining his country took a surprising toll.

There are still uncertainties about his future, with Barca still maintaining an interest and with the player himself in no hurry to enter into contract negotiations to extend the two years he has remaining on his current Anfield contract.

Yet the midfielder believes that he has only one duty at present, which is to address the criticism that he and his team-mates have been forced to face, about their readiness to take responsibility for the mess Liverpool are in.

Sir Alex Ferguson recently offered a stinging attack on modern players when he said that they now look to readily for excuses instead of looking at themselves, and that criticism has been levelled at the Liverpool squad.

Mascherano though, wants his team to now stand up and be counted, with a performance against Arsenal that will show the Reds mean business as they attempt to turn their season around.

"We know Arsenal will be very tough because they're such a good side. But we've also shown we can beat them, we've done it before and know we have the players and the team which can do it again," he said,

"Everyone knows we can beat anyone, we showed that by beating Manchester United at home and playing really well. What we need to do now is prove we can beat another top side.

"When we do get it together we will really beat someone, but we are all in this together. We have to start again and get it right, and when we do, then we have the side to achieve what the fans want."

Arsenal sitting on the coat-tails of the leaders in the Premier League, and Manchester City already ahead of Liverpool in the race for fourth, it leaves little room for error from now on for the Anfield club.

City will spend big if they need to in the transfer window, to ensure they kick on in the second half of the campaign, which will put Liverpool under even more pressure.

But Mascherano is convinced that his side - with their big name players finally back from injury - will also be a different proposition as the season progresses, and he added:

"We had Torres back against Fiorentina, Stevie is getting fitter with every game and of course Alberto Aquilani started too. All those things can only be good for us," he said.

"What we must do now is start winning again and show to people that we are a top side. It is all about confidence, but we all know we're a better team than we have shown so far.

"Sometimes, when your confidence is low, it makes it difficult to show your real qualities. In football 80 per cent is from the head and the other 20 is about the physical and tactical side.

"We know December is going to be a crucial month for us - and a great time to change everything. If we start winning, the confidence will return."

Rafa hits back at Kilnsmann

Rafael Benitez has delivered a withering riposte to his critics and dismissed Jurgen Klinsmann's managerial record, after the German attacked his tenure as Reds boss.

The former Germany international slammed Benitez's record as Liverpool manager and the quality of the current squad. Klinsmann took Germany to the semi-finals of their home World Cup in 2006, but his stint in charge of Bayern Munich lasted less than a season before he was sacked.

Speaking about Klinsmann's attack, Benitez said: ''I think he was an expert in marketing. His management career? Short.''

Klinsmann was at the centre of a storm two years ago when he was involved in talks with Liverpool's American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett over the Anfield hot seat.

Former Liverpool manager Graeme Souness also warned of a potential ''meltdown'' at the club this week but Benitez said today: ''There is always criticism but I don't listen. I turn off the volume on the TV.''

He added sarcastically: ''Both have fantastic records as managers, so the fans ignore what they say. We have to win, we have a responsibility and we must concentrate on our job. If someone talks too much, it is their problem, but the fans know the record they both have as managers, fantastic.''

Klinsmann comments on Rafa and on his tactics

The former Germany coach has been less than impressed with the Reds' efforts this season.

Rafael Benitez's performance as the manager of Liverpool has allegedly come under harsh scrutiny from Jurgen Klinsmann, who is the man mooted to take over from the Spaniard if the current situation continues.

The Reds have been eliminated from the Champions League and are playing catch-up in the domestic circuit, having only one win from their last five outings in the Premier League.

The former Germany and Bayern Munich manager insists that the squad as a whole lacks flair, consistency and quality as they compete for a top-four spot and a Europa League scalp this season.

"What you miss in Liverpool is the technical pace and the passing," Klinsmann is quoted in The Sun as saying.

"They have a couple of players who can do that but not all over the place. There's no real flow and there's a lack of creativity."

The 45-year-old believes Benitez has put a mountain of pressure on Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, maintaining that the success or failure of the club lies in the hands of those two players.

He continued: "If it's down to Torres or Gerrard, then that's not enough.

"You can't always put it on the shoulders of two players. That's why they need more quality in the team to make sure they finish in the top four this season."

The German went on to attribute the early Champions League exit to the departure of the club's former pass-master, Xabi Alonso.

He added: "It is a big surprise that Liverpool didn't make it to the final 16 because they have always been there over the last few years and had tremendous success.

"There were always questions at the start of the season - especially after losing Xabi Alonso, who was a tremendous asset to Liverpool over the last few years.

"It's sad that Liverpool are not in the knockout stage because that is where they belong, Liverpool's name is huge on the continent."

Klinsmann finally shared his view on the direction that the club must take if they are to regain their footing in the domestic and European circuit.

"In my opinion they are lacking creativity and a real No 10, a playmaker, and a great world-class striker next to Torres," he said.

"It's frustrating to see where they stand now. Over the stretch of six games they just couldn't keep up. They lack quality.

"It also shows in the Premier League that they don't have the consistency to keep up with the big teams.

"Now is a moment to think about how they are to go forward."

Rafa makes premier league its top priority

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez will put qualifying for an immediate Champions League return to the top of his list of priorities after crashing out of the competition with their lowest ever points total.

The Premier League club already knew they could not make it through to the knockout stages, but succumbed to a late goal yet again to lose 2-1 at home to Fiorentina on Wednesday night, a result which cost them a seeding in the Europa League. Liverpool only beat Debrecen to finish on seven points.

Benitez knows that a failure to finish in the top four this season, and book a place in the Champions League next season, is unthinkable both in footballing and financial terms. And while he will look for a second European trophy of his tenure, he will be concentrating on domestic matters.

He said: "We will take it (the Europa League) seriously, but for us the main thing is to progress in the Premier League. To be in the top four.

"We do not play in the Europa League until February, so we will have plenty of time to concentrate on the Premier League. Another European competition is later.

"What has happened to us in the Champions League, the misfortunes, will be an experience the players will remember and it will give them strength and more determination to improve over the rest of the season.

"I hope that a new beginning, a new season, starts for us from this point. Now we must concentrate on Arsenal and try to do well on Sunday.

"This has been a very disappointing Champions League campaign. Two late goals in matches against Lyon changed everything, and now it has happened again against Fiorentina.

"We knew we could not progress before the game, but to lose another late goal was very disappointing for the team, for everyone.

"I would expect a different approach on Sunday against Arsenal. It is always difficult approaching a game like Fiorentina knowing that whatever you do you cannot change the situation, we were already out.''

The Spaniard attempted to take the positives from another setback against Fiorentina with the performance of Alberto Aquilani giving him the greatest satisfaction.

"Even though we lost, there were some good things to take into our next match. Alberto Aquilani and Fernando Torres both looked good, while Steven Gerrard is getting closer to full fitness,'' he said. "Gerrard is getting more games under his belt, Torres looked very positive and Aquilani played well and showed quality with his passes.

"It was also good to see young Danny Pacheco getting some time on the pitch in the first team, he is a young player of real potential. Both Torres and Aquilani are fit and will train hard for the rest of the week and they will be ready for the Arsenal match.''

Aquilani, who made his full debut against Fiorentina, hopes to now show the fans what he can do.

An ankle injury restricted the Italy international, who arrived in the summer after the departure of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, to just 22 minutes prior to this week's game.

"I started for the first time in seven or eight months in the first XI - that's very hard,'' he said. "After that length of time it's difficult to be fit but I'm happy because I'm playing and that means I'm getting there.

"My ankle is better, it's improved, so while the result was not good from a personal point of view it's been good physically. I can play better but it was important to start and to run because after seven months I need to play, play, play because I'm in a new team.

"There are very good players and they can help me. The [Fiorentina] game was important for the confidence when playing with Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano and the other players.

"The first half I was okay and then after that I got a little bit tired, but that's normal. I hope I can play against Arsenal. I am in the squad so I hope I can play more and improve my match fitness, because that is important.

"If you don't play the fitness is not good. The training is good but matches are different. I am ready but I don't know if I can play 90 minutes. But this match was important for improving.''

Stevie praises Aquilani and glad to see Nando back

Liverpool are now well and truly looking ahead after Alberto Aquilani finally made his full debut and Fernando Torres returned from injury in their Champions League dead rubber loss to Fiorentina.

Manager Rafael Benitez and skipper Steven Gerrard were impressed by Aquilani's showing at Anfield, where the technical midfielder showed enough to suggest he can at least partially fill the void left by Xabi Alonso and contribute to a turnaround in the Premier League, starting with Arsenal on Sunday.

Awaiting Arsenal at Anfield will be the closest thing to a full-strength Liverpool Benitez has been able to field this season, given both top scorer Torres and the talismanic Gerrard will both be available alongside £20 million summer signing Aquilani, who Benitez signed knowing he would be injured until around November.

Gerrard hailed Aquilani's play-making qualities in his side's disappointing 2-1 loss to Group E winner Fiorentina on Wednesday night.

"He did well,'' said Gerrard. "It's going to take him some time to get up to speed in terms of match fitness but the boy's a player, there's no doubt about that. He can see a pass, he's on the same wavelength and he will turn into a fantastic player for this club.''

Boss Benitez was also happy with Aquilani and particularly the return of Torres, who he knows is one of the few players at his disposal who can turn Liverpool from a good side into a great one.

He said: "To see Aquilani, to see Torres, those were the real positive things for the next match and the rest of our season. Aquilani showed his quality, his touch was good. His vision and passing were good but obviously he will have to work on his match fitness. Everyone is available for Sunday, if he trains well he could well be involved against Arsenal.

"We are still trying to see the positives, we are playing better and we must now take that into a very important game. It is the beginning of a new season for us now, I hope.''

Liverpool end Champions legaue campaign with defeat

Liverpool's miserable Champions League campaign ended in defeat to Fiorentina. The visitors grabbed a late winner through Alberto Gilardino in the second minute of added time to clinch top spot in Group E.

Looking at the positives, Liverpool started with Alberto Aquilani at last - and Fernando Torres returned from a groin injury for the final 25 minutes.

Yossi Benayoun's first-half header gave Liverpool hope in a game they largely controlled, but defensive uncertainty gave Martin Jorgensen the chance to drive home the equaliser in the second period.

Fiorentina, aware that Lyon were hammering Debrecen, realised they needed to win to make sure of top spot in the group, and they piled on some belated pressure.

It paid off and Liverpool were to suffer yet another late goal disaster. It had happened in both games against Lyon, and now Fiorentina struck to steal their win in injury time.

Substitute Juan Vargas set up Gilardino for a fierce finish that sent the Fiorentina fans wild, and the club's coaching staff into delirious jigs of delight.

Liverpool rested Jamie Carragher, Jose Reina, Glen Johnson and Lucas and would have left out Dirk Kuyt had David Ngog not been taken ill earlier in the day.

Youngster Stephen Darby had a rare run-out at right-back, while Italian defender Andrea Dossena was used in the unlikely role of left-midfield.

The Italians, already secure in the last 16, were missing Stevan Jovetic, their most exciting attacker who scored both goals in their 2-0 home win over Liverpool in September.

The Montenegro international failed a late fitness test on an ankle injury which meant Fiorentina fielding only three of the starting line-up from the first match.

Another of Liverpool's support cast, second-choice goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri was soon into action as he raced from his line to block Cesare Natali's run onto a weak Daniel Agger back pass.

Aquilani was neat and inventive, but Liverpool failed to create anything significant before their Brazilian goalkeeper saved well from Lorenzo De Silvestri and Riccardo Montolivo to keep his side on level terms.

The game, sometimes with almost a testimonial feel about it, meandered on towards the break before Liverpool found themselves ahead after 43 minutes.

Manuel Pasqual's foul on Steven Gerrard gave the Liverpool captain the chance to lift a free-kick towards the near post for Yossi Benayoun to flick a header back into the far corner, despite Sebastien Frey getting a touch on the effort.

Liverpool dominated the early stages after the break, but were punished for poor judgement by Martin Skrtel, who allowed a cross-field pass to drift past him. Darby was left facing two attackers, and could do little to stop captain Martin Jorgensen driving home the equaliser after 63 minutes.

Torres had been standing on the touchline waiting to come on while all this was going on, and he eventually arrived before the restart for Kuyt. Benitez maintains that with Torres fit, Liverpool would never have been in the position of European also-rans. Torres tried his best to prove the point with some fine runs.

There had been occasional glimpses of Aquilani's talent, but he was taken off to give reserve striker Daniel Pacheco his debut. The 18-year-old is rated very highly by Benitez, and joined Torres in an all-Spanish front pairing.

Fabio Aurelio replaced the hard-working Javier Mascherano near the end, with Fiorentina searching for the crucial winner that would win the group. It arrived in added time and left Liverpool with their worst-ever Champions League group points tally.

Aquilani finally to make his first start for Liverpool

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has played down any hint of discontent from Alberto Aquilani over his lack of first-team opportunities at Anfield.

Midfielder Aquilani - a £20million signing from Roma - is poised to start for the first time in the Reds` Champions League clash with Fiorentina.

Reports from Italy suggested Aquilani was becoming frustrated at his lack of playing time, with his father claiming he has been fully recovered from his knee injury for over a month.

But Benitez refuted the allegations, and said: "Aquilani was a little surprised to hear critical comments supposedly from his father on why he was not playing here - he does not believe they are accurate.

"He understands why he has not played much yet, he has not been fit and now needs match fitness. He needs to get used to the English game and it would have been a risk to play him in such tough games as at Everton and Blackburn.

"But we are out of the Champions League, he can play against Fiorentina and get used to things better without so much pressure. We can now see how he will react."

Liverpool lining up loan move for Brazilian

Rafael Benitez is reportedly lining up a loan move for Brazilian youngster Keirrison.

The Barcelona striker has spent the opening months of the season on loan at Benfica, but with chances in Portugal coming at a premium, that season-long deal could be cut short with the forward being switched to Merseyside.

Liverpool were after the player in January '09, but failed to agree a deal for the player before the transfer window shut. When they returned to try and sign the player again in the summer, he decided to join the Nou Camp side for a fee in the region of £12 million.

The 21-year-old has failed to make an impression in Portugal, a surprise considering his goalscoring record in the Brazilian league with Coritiba and Palmerias.

A string of clubs in europe and south america have previously been interested, with Arsenal and Real Madrid just two clubs to be mentioned.

However, it is a loan deal that could suit both parties in this particular instance best, and Liverpool are keen to secure a short-term deal in a bid to strengthen their attacking line.

With Barcelona desperate to see if the player can make the grade in european football, the Reds could be their best option and the samba star could be on his way to Anfield

Benitez positive about new deal for Masch

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has said the club are in talks with midfielder Javier Mascherano about extending his contract, which has two years left to run.

Mascherano was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona this summer but Benitez insists the player is happy and negotiations are under way about extending his current deal.

"We were talking with him and his agent a month ago about our idea and his idea," Liverpool manager Benitez said.

"He's doing really well and has come back to his best. We were really pleased to talk to him to make progress.

"We have plenty of time but we are happy with him and he is happier now, too.
"He has two more years on his contract; we were talking before and we will sit down sooner rather than later and talk about the future.

"The last conversations that we had were very positive."
Benitez is also hoping to tie up a new contract for goalkeeper Pepe Reina over the coming months.

"We are very happy with him," Benitez said. "He has been improving every single year and he will improve more because goalkeepers have more time in their career.
"He's always positive and he's one of the best in the training sessions because his attitude is always good.

"It depends on the agent and what the player wants but Pepe is very happy here in Liverpool so I don't see a big problem.

"The team-mates love him because he's a very good example."

Liverpool interested in spurs striker but its not Keane

Reds boss Rafa Benitez is believed to be after Spurs striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.

The Russian forward has found life difficult at White Hart Lane, spending the majority of time on the bench for Tottenham Hotspur as Jermain Defoe, Robbie Keane and Peter Crouch hog the starting positions.

Pavlyuchenko is keen to leave North London, and the striker has been constantly linked with a move to Serie 'A' side Roma.

However, Liverpool boss Benitez is keen to add some strength to his thin attacking options, and Pavlyuchenko could be a shock choice for the Spaniard.

Rumours that originally surfaced in The People refuse to go away, and the striker hasn't hidden his desire to move.

"I only sit on the bench for my club - I can only hope that January will bring changes in my life," said Pavlyuchenko.

"I've never had such a black period in my life."

Same result over and over again , but why does Rafa doesn't realise it

Blackburn and Liverpool fought out a gruelling 0-0 stalemate at Ewood Park with Liverpool substitute David Ngog coming closest to a goal with a shot that rattled the bar.

The first half was a shocking, grim affair with neither side producing anything worthy of note.

After the break Liverpool were arguably the better side, but even a third successive clean sheet will not mask another display which lacked drive and belief.

Blackburn deserved their point in a good week which also saw them beat Chelsea in the Carling Cup quarter-finals.

They made four changes from Wednesday's victorious side with Michel Salgado, Nikola Kalinic, Morten Gamst Pedersen and Jason Roberts on the bench and the fresh legs of Gael Givet, Vince Grella, El Hadji Diouf and Franco Di Santo all back in the side.

Liverpool had Albert Riera and Yossi Benayoun returning to the starting line-up from the side which won at Everton last time out.

Dirk Kuyt played as the lone central striker with Steven Gerrard, playing his 500th game for the club, delegated to his supporting role.

With Riera and Benayoun out wide and a clear decision to defend in depth, Liverpool were looking to hit Blackburn on the break.

Rovers accepted the initiative handed to them in midfield and came forward with purpose with ex-Liverpool man Diouf prominent as the home side monopolised possession.

Not one serious chance was created in the opening half, Liverpool not having enough up front to make things happen and Blackburn finding it tough to weave their way through Liverpool's massed ranks.

Rovers boss Sam Allardyce, back after his heart surgery but leaving the dug-out to his assistant Neil McDonald, would have been reasonably pleased with what he was watching.

Liverpool chief Rafael Benitez fashioned his side to counter Rovers' aerial threat at set-pieces.

He has always been preoccupied with competing against anything Allardyce comes up with, either at Bolton or now Ewood Park.

The first half saw precious little penalty box activity. Givet's 36th-minute free-kick presented Di Santo with a flick-on chance, but Jose Reina was alive to the danger.

A minute later Gerrard burst into the box from the left, but Chris Samba's lunging tackle deflected the shot wide of the far post.

Di Santo should have scored a minute into the second period when Steven Nzonzi's pass put him clear, but the young striker was painfully slow to get the ball under control and was dispossessed by Daniel Agger.

Then Liverpool again lost Riera to injury as he limped away to be replaced by Ngog, Kuyt moving to the left.

Gerrard soon tested Paul Robinson from 25 yards and then saw another flighted chip clear the bar. Diouf was booked for tripping Javier Mascherano, the tempo of the game finally rising.

Gerrard had another shot blocked and Benayoun's header from his captain's corner flew over the bar.

Rovers hit back when they took advantage of Lucas falling over in possession, surging away for Di Santo to test Reina.

Glen Johnson's exciting run past four men ended with a low cross that Ngog smashed against the bar after 71 minutes, Kuyt's follow up being blocked by Samba.

David Hoilett came on for Diouf and Nabil El Zhar replaced Benayoun, with Benni McCarthy shooting inches wide before being taken off after 76 minutes, Kalinic taking over.

Johnson's cross was then headed back by Gerrard for Ngog, who failed to connect three yards out under pressure.

Rovers sent on Keith Andrews for Di Santo with six minutes left as Liverpool surged forward, but they could not manage the decisive finish.

Benitez fears injury may ruin world cup dreams for Torres

Fernando Torres' groin injury will cast a shadow over the Liverpool striker's season and may affect his chances of being fully fit for the World Cup next summer, according to manager Rafael Benitez.

The Spain international striker has missed Liverpool's last four games with a hernia problem sustained in October and will not travel to Ewood Park for this afternoon's Premier League fixture with Blackburn Rovers, although Benitez expects him to be available for the dead rubber Champions League tie with Fiorentina at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

Benitez is confident the player, who has featured in just three of Liverpool's last 10 games, has rested sufficiently to overcome the injury.

However, he admits both club and country will need to keep "a close eye" on him for the rest of the campaign if he is to avoid the need for a complete rest from football next summer, when he will form an integral part of Spain's attempt to win the World Cup for the first time.

"He is very close, but you do not want to take any risks," Benitez said.

"Sometimes he is feeling the problem a little bit but he has more confidence now, so he is much better.

"He can carry on, but we will need to keep a close eye on him during the season. He will be a special case. He will be one of a few players we have doing specific work to avoid injuries.

"When you have this kind of problem, especially a groin problem, it is difficult because every specialist has a different opinion.

"They are probably all the same in the end, because it is just a matter of time, but we had a meeting with four this week and everyone had their own view.

"Fernando was adamant right from the start that he did not want an operation, and he is improving now and training again.

"The main thing for the moment is to see if he can progress during the season. Maybe, because he has not played so many games, he will be fresh for us.

"After that, we will have to analyse his condition. We will discuss it with Spain."

Torres won't be risked at Ewood Park

Fernando Torres has been ruled out of Liverpool’s Premier League trip to Blackburn on Saturday after failing to recover sufficiently quickly from the groin injury which has forced him to miss Rafael Benitez’ side’s last four fixtures.

The Spanish international striker returned to full training with his team-mates yesterday and took part today, but Benitez has confirmed he is not yet fit enough to be considered available, though the Liverpool manager is hoping Torres will be able to play some part against Fiorentina in the dead rubber Champions League game on Wednesday.

“Fernando will not be in the squad tomorrow,” confirmed Benitez. “He is much better than he was and he is very close and we hope to have him available against Fiorentina so at least we can give him some minutes.

“He played in a game in training this week but we have to keep an eye on him. The doctors said it would be three weeks, more or less, before he is ready and we are still within that time, so he is progressing well.

“Of course, it would be better for us to have one of the best strikers in the world available. He is a top striker who is always a threat, so it is really good news for the club that he is on his way back, but we have also been very pleased with David Ngog, who has done well while Fernando has been out.”

Torres picked up the injury in October while on international duty with Spain and has struggled for fitness ever since, featuring in just three of Liverpool’s subsequent 10 games, and failing to finish any of those he was deemed fit enough to play in.
His absence has coincided with a dreadful run of form for Benitez’s side, winning just three of those fixtures as their Champions League and Premier League campaigns have fallen apart.

Benitez is taking solace, though, that Liverpool’s fortuitous win in the Merseyside derby last Sunday could prove a turning point in a week of huge significance for the club. Steven Gerrard will make his 500th appearance for Liverpool at Ewood Park in the week in which Anfield celebrated the 50th anniversary of Bill Shankly’s arrival as manager

Drogba thinks Liverpool will come back harder

Chelsea forward Didier Drogba has dismissed claims the Premier League title is a two horse race between themselves and Manchester United.

The towering Ivorian claims it is too early to write off Liverpool’s league aspirations and suggested Arsenal are more than capable of going on a run. The 31-year-old also mentioned Manchester City and Tottenham, who this year have both come into the equation.
Drogba told the latest issue of FourFourTwo Magazine: “It's still too early to say that [it's a two-horse race].”
“I honestly think Liverpool can get back into it because we haven't played enough games to rule them out.”

Vital boost for Liverpool as Torres nearing return

Fernando Torres could return from injury in Liverpool's game at Blackburn on Saturday, lining up with captain Steven Gerrard for the first time in 10 matches. Liverpool could have their feared attacking partnership back together for Gerrard's 500th match for the club.

Torres has not figured since the Champions League clash with Lyon on November 4 following a problem sustained on international duty, but the striker is close to returning to full training after treatment for a serious groin injury. Manager Rafael Benitez will give the striker every chance of taking on Blackburn, who beat Chelsea in the Carling Cup quarter-finals last night.

"The feedback we had about Torres yesterday was very positive and he was feeling good," said Benitez. "We will see how he is in the next training sessions, but it seems as though things are going well.''

Asked whether the Spain international could face Rovers, Benitez said: "It depends on how he feels during the week. He has to keep training with the fitness coach, but if he is feeling better maybe he can be involved in normal training sessions and afterwards we can decide.''

Benitez expects to have something close to a full squad of players to choose from for the clash with Sam Allardyce's side.

"We have two or three players with knocks, but hopefully they are small things," he said. "It is always very positive (to have a fully fit squad), but there is a big difference in players being available and being ready.

"When they are coming back from injuries you have to be careful, but at least we will have options we didn't have before.''

Gerrard admits defeat in title race

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says they're out of the title race.

It is 19 years since Liverpool last lorded it over England and the Anfield faithful will have to wait at least another year, according to the England midfielder.

"I think we have to be realistic. There is still a lot of football to be played and it is possible to turn it around. But I think Chelsea are looking really strong at the moment.

"Our main target is to get back into the top four. We’re coming off the back of a fantastic win at Everton and we want to continue that against Blackburn and try and go on a run of games where we can get closer to the teams above us."

Gerrard to make milestone 500th appearance for Liverpool

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is due to make his 500th appearance for the Anfield club in Saturday's home encounter with Blackburn.

The homegrown product made his debut against the same opposition as a last-minute substitute 11 years ago.

He has since gone on to become a club legend with highlights including inspirational performances in the Champions League and FA Cup final wins of 2005 and 2006 respectively.

Gerrard added: "It means everything to me personally. I'm a local boy and my dream when I was young was always just to play one game for Liverpool. So to reach this milestone is a really proud moment for my family and myself."

The only major medal missing from Gerrard's collection after an outstanding career with Liverpool is a league title and he has no plans to rest until he achieves it.

Liverpool have not won the league since 1990.

He said: "It's been too long without a league title and because it is missing from my collection it is one that I'm most desperate for going forward."

Fernando Torres proud to be a Scouser

Fernando Torres has dashed Manchester City's hopes of luring him away from Anfield by admitting he already feels like a dyed-in-the-wool Scouser.
Liverpool's £21million record signing figures prominently on City's wanted list, with speculation mounting that a £50million bid could be imminent.

But the former Atletico Madrid striker, already a huge favourite among Liverpool supporters, insists his only aim is to ensure his name becomes woven into Anfield folklore with his scoring exploits over the next few years.

'I really feel at home here,' he said. 'From my first day as a Liverpool player, right up to today, I have always felt that Anfield is my home. I feel like I am from Liverpool.
'I would like to be part of Liverpool's history one day by winning trophies. I have plenty of years here, I'm sure of that, and I hope the trophies will come soon.

The fans have seen some of the best players in the world playing for Liverpool, and now they sing my name.
'For me, it is amazing to score at Anfield and amazing to score in front of the Kop. When I hear people sing my name, it is the best feeling I can have on the pitch.

'But I have only been here two years, and I have not won any trophies yet. I have only scored some goals, but I hope, in a few years, I can write another book, explaining about the trophies I have won as a Liverpool player.
'The people here are very different from in Madrid. Over there, people don't have much respect for players, but, here, even Evertonians talk to me in a really good way. When I was at Atletico, the Real Madrid fans didn't like me, but Everton fans are really friendly with me. I must say, I was surprised by that.
'This is my home, and it helps that I have learned the language. Have I picked up any Scouse? Deffo! I am picking up words all the time, because there are a lot of Scousers at the club.
'It was difficult to begin with, but I can more or less understand them now. If my daughter grows up speaking English and Scouse, I will be proud.'

Atletico striker on Liverpool radar

Rafa Benitez is lining up a £15m move for Atletico Madrid’s Diego Forlan, according to reports.

The Liverpool manager is keen to strengthen his strike force in January by attempting to persuade the Mardid striker with a move to Anfield.

Benitez is looking to enter the January transfer market for a striker with Fernando Torres struggling with a hernia injury and Andriy Voronin failing to make an impact this season.

Forlan has scored five times in 11 games for the Spanish club this season and could return to the England in the near future.

The 30-year-old has opened the door on a return to the Premier League and insists he has nothing to prove.

Forlan told UEFA’s official website: “England, and the Premier League, gave me many things and I thank them for that. If I have a chance to return, I would like to go.

“I feel I have nothing to prove there. The only difference is that I am more experienced today.”
