Rafa not ready to budge from Xabi's price tag

Real Madrid are to attempt to close out a deal for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso by including a player in the transfer.

Los Merengues have been given until Monday by the Reds to either complete the transfer or end their chase for Alonso.

Reports have emerged that the Merseysiders are demanding an upfront transfer fee of €35 million and an additional €5m based on the player's success at the Santiago Bernabeu, but the Spanish powerhouse have so far yet to improve on their last bid of €25m.

Los Blancos could try to bridge the massive €10m gap by offering a choice of three players to include in a part-exchange deal: Alvaro Negredo, Rafael van der Vaart or Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

The paper believes that Liverpool will be tempted by the proposal as they are searching for a frontman to accompany Fernando Torres. And, if accepted, it will allow the Merengues to clear an extra space in the dressing room to welcome Alonso into the squad.

The ball is now very much in Madrid ’s court after Xabi reportedly handed in his transfer request to his Anfield bosses.

Negredo is currently valued at around €15m, while Huntelaar’s price tag is set at €20m.

Xabi wants out of Anfield

Xabi Alonso has informed Liverpool that he would like to bring his five-year stint with the club to an end.

Widespread reports claimed on Thursday morning that the Spanish midfielder had submitted a transfer request following weeks of speculation about his future.

A club source has now confirmed the news, with Alonso having previously only told manager Rafa Benitez verbally that he wanted to leave Anfield.

Benitez had grown frustrated by the uncertainty surrounding Alonso, telling him earlier this week that he wanted the matter to be resolved quickly.

Real Madrid have been monitoring Alonso's situation for much of the summer as they strive to strengthen their squad.

Liverpool have previously made it clear that it will take a fee of around £30million to prise the 27-year-old away from the club.

Real have been reluctant to meet such a valuation but a transfer would now appear to be close.

It is reported that a deal could be struck in the next couple of days for Alonso to join Real for a price in the region of £25million.

Alonso has enjoyed a successful spell in English football, having arrived at Liverpool from Real Sociedad in 2004.

Arbeloa Completes Real Switch

Spain defender Alvaro Arbeloa is joining Real Madrid on a five-year contract from Liverpool.
The 26-year-old Arbeloa passed a medical Wednesday in Madrid before completing his 3.5 million-pound ($5.7 million) transfer from the Premier League club.

"The results of every test are very satisfactory,'' Dr. Carlos Diez said. "He is delighted about playing for Real Madrid. It's always been his dream. He can't wait to join his teammates.''
Arbeloa becomes the club's seventh offseason signing, after Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema, Raul Albiol, Alvaro Negredo and Esteban Granero.
"Arbeloa's versatility allows him to play anywhere in defense,'' Madrid said on its Web site. "He is a very regular and consistent player who thrives in one-on-ones.''
Arbeloa, who was part of the Spain squad that won the 2008 European championship, was with Madrid as a youth player before moving to Deportivo La Coruna in 2006 and then on to Liverpool six months later.
The right back was in the final year of his Liverpool contract, having moved to Anfield for 2.6 million pounds in January 2007. He played 99 games for the English club and scored two goals.

Arbeloa certain to join Real in few Days

Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa could complete his return to Real Madrid in the next few days.
Arbeloa, along with Liverpool team-mate and compatriot Xabi Alonso, has long been linked with a move to Madrid.
Reports in Spain suggest the 26-year-old has already agreed personal terms with his former club and that Liverpool have accepted a bid of around £3.5million.
And Arbeloa believes the last few details will be finalised this week

'At the moment I am focused on Liverpool but it is true that the deal is close to being completed,' he told Spanish sports daily Marca. 'We'll see what happens in the next few days, if we can all make an effort so the the negotiations come to a good end, and we all come out having benefited, which is what everyone wants.

'I insist that everything is going forwards and everyone is in agreement - I am the one who has the most desire to sign for Madrid.

'I don't know what the likelihood is in percentages, it's a question more for the clubs. But, as I understand, it seems everything is going well and there is little left to resolve. It could all be sealed this week.'
Arbeloa progressed through the ranks at Madrid but only played for the first team twice before moving to Deportivo la Coruna in 2006.

He left Spain for Liverpool a year later and has done well in the Barclays Premier League, earning a call up to the Spain team with whom he won Euro 2008.

Rafa wants Xabi to stay for the Fans

Every Liverpool Supporter across the world loves Xabi Alonso and want him to stay at Liverpool for many more years to come.

He was the most consistent performer for liverpool last season. He showed the best form last season since his arrival on merseyside.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has pointed to the massive amount of support fans in Thailand and Singapore for Xabi Alonso as a reason for the Spanish midfielder to stay at Anfield.

Alonso has been linked with a move to Real Madrid all summer and is said to be undecided on his future.

Benitez confirmed that he has begun talks with Alonso into convincing him to stay at the club beyond this summer.

“I talked to Xabi yesterday and told him, as he can see here, that the fans love him and I said to him, ‘maybe you have to stay,” Benitez said on Saturday.

“You can see he is a really good player and I’ll be really pleased if he stays. All the players and his team-mates want him to stay. If we keep Xabi I will be very pleased.”

Alonso is expected to take part in tomorrow’s pre-season friendly in Singapore.

Dossena heading back to Italy

Liverpool FC's Italian left back Andrea Dossena is heading for an exit with Napoli being the possible destination this summer, according to the player's agent.

The 27-year-old has had a troublesome debut season with the Merseyside club despite scoring goals against the club's thumping wins over Real Madrid and Manchester United.

The left-back, who was signed form Udinese for £7m last summer, struggled to make an impact as the speed and physical nature of the Premier League at times overwhelmed the Italian international.

And now, he is willing to move back to his homeland in order to re-establish himself as Marcelo Lippi's first choice left back

Dossena's agent Roberto La Florio has said that both the player and Serie A side willing to do business and a move to Napoli would suit all parties involved.

"There is the will to join Napoli. Napoli want Dossena, and should they follow him, it means they are ready to satisfy the player's exigencies," La Florio told Italian radio station Kiss Kiss.

"Now they must decide, because they may need Andrea due to Fabio Aurelio's injury. The two parts must meet to find an agreement."

Xabi denies fake injury claims

XABI ALONSO has denied accusations he feigned injury to avoid playing against Thailand and has declared himself fit for tomorrow’s clash with Singapore.

The Liverpool midfielder missed the midweek match in Bangkok with some reports suggesting he didn’t want to risk picking up a knock which could scupper a possible move to Real Madrid.

However, despite the ongoing uncertainty over his future, Alonso insists he is still fully committed to the Reds’ pre-season build up.

“I would never fake an injury not to play,” he said.

“I hurt my ankle in training but it is much better now. I trained on Thursday evening and again today.

“Now I hope to play in the game on Sunday. I am certainly training for that but whether I will play or not you will need to ask Rafa.”

Reports from Spain that Alonso would be flying home early to conclude a £30million transfer were also wide of the mark.

“I will be here with the squad until the end of the tour,” he added.

Meanwhile, Alonso believes Liverpool will have to reach the 90-point mark next season if they are going to end their long wait to be crowned champions.

The Reds picked up 86 last season – a club record in the Premier League – but still finished four adrift of Manchester United.

“It is very difficult to win the Premier League but if we do things better than last season then we will have a good chance,” he said.

“We did really well against the top four teams last season but we drew too many games at home against other clubs which meant we weren’t in a strong position going into the last few matches.

“At the start of last season we wanted to progress and we did that.

“We were not able to win it but we went a lot closer than in previous seasons.

“This season we have to be looking to get up to 90 points.

“If we’re able to continue to progress then we will have a good chance. We certainly have the belief.”

Alonso was speaking alongside Kenny Dalglish at an adidas coaching clinic held at Victoria Junior College in Singapore.

“It’s brilliant to see they are developing football in this country,” Alonso said.

“It’s been amazing for us to come to a place like this which is so far away from Liverpool and feel the support they have for the club.

“The supporters here are just as passionate as they are in Liverpool.”

Barcelona Manager admits defeat in chase for Mascherano

Barcelona Manager Pep Guardiola had admitted that it will be very difficult for the European Champions to take Javier Mascherano to Nou Camp.

Rafael Benitez's reluctance to let the Argentina international leave makes a transfer unlikely.

The Spanish league champions have been linked with a move for the Argentinean midfielder consistently this summer, with the player's agent Walter Tamer claiming that he would prefer a move to the Camp Nou.

But Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is, of course, reluctant to sell Mascherano and has previously stated that the player has no price and is extremely important to the club.

And while Guardiola was full of praise for Mascherano, he also declared his belief that signing the player is unlikely, given Benitez's stance.

"Of course we know Mascherano, he's a huge player," Guardiola told Sky Sports News, after Barcelona's 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the Wembley Cup.

"He's at a huge team, with a great manager in Benitez.

"But if he [Benitez] wants to keep Mascherano, then it is a problem."

Gerrard free from all charges of Affray

England footballer Steven Gerrard is a free man after he was cleared of unjustly attacking a man in a bar.

The Liverpool captain was accused of attacking a DJ in a nightclub in a row over music in December 2008, but has been cleared after the jury's verdict was delivered on Friday.

Gerrard admitted hitting Marcus McGee, 34, in a Southport bar, but a jury at the city's Crown Court accepted his explanation that it was in self-defence.

The 29-year-old was the only one of seven defendants to be cleared over the ''explosion of violence'' at the Lounge Inn during which Mr McGee lost a tooth and suffered facial cuts.

Speaking to reporters, he said: ''Can I just say how pleased I am with today's verdict.

''I'd like to put this case behind me. I'm really looking forward to the season ahead and concentrating on football.

''I'd like to say a big thank you to my legal team, my friends and family and to everyone at Liverpool Football Club for supporting me.''

The trial heard that Gerrard was at the Lounge Inn in Southport, Merseyside, on December 29 to celebrate Liverpool's 5-1 demolition of Newcastle United hours earlier.

The Reds' captain, who scored twice in the game, was enjoying a night out with a party of friends including Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish, 58.

CCTV footage from the bar showed Gerrard and his friends drinking beer, downing shots and dancing round while chanting football songs. But trouble flared at around 2am when the father-of-two wanted to change the music on the CD player.

Prosecutor David Turner QC told the jury of seven women and five men that Gerrard lost his cool after Mr McGee refused his request to change the music.

He said the millionaire footballer stormed off in a huff and then confronted Mr McGee at the bar seven minutes later, talking to him for 23 seconds before swinging three upper-cut punches at him.

However, Gerrard's version of events differed. The footballer, who denied affray, told the jury yesterday that he was ''shocked'' by Mr McGee's attitude.

He said the businessman told him: ''You are not putting no f****** music on in here'' and swore at him. Gerrard said they argued for a few seconds before he walked away.

The footballer said that minutes later he decided to smooth things over, against the advice of his friends, because he did not want the row to ruin his night.

He told the court: ''I asked Marcus what was the problem with the music machine and why he treated me like that. Very quickly he came off the bar stool and was in my face right by me.''

He told his defence counsel, John Kelsey-Fry, that he hit out at Mr McGee in self-defence. He said: ''I firmly believed Marcus came towards me to hit me.''

Gerrard described raising his left arm to grab the back of Mr McGee's jumper.

He said: ''I grabbed the back of his jumper as he moved forward to me. When I had hold of Marcus, I remember swinging my right hand two or three times.''

He said the incident took about four or five seconds before he was ''pushed and pulled'' away from Mr McGee.

Gerrard apologised for what happened, telling the jury: ''I am sorry about the whole incident.''

CCTV footage showed that Gerrard's friend, John Doran, actually struck the first blow.

Five of Gerrard's friends who accompanied him that night admitted affray. They are Ian Smith, 19, of Hilary Avenue, John Doran, 29, of Woodlands Road, and Paul McGrattan, 31, of Linden Drive, all Huyton, and Accrington Stanley footballers Robert Grant, 19, of Enstone Avenue, Litherland, and Ian Dunbavin, 28, of Guildford Road, Southport.

Another friend, John McGrattan, 34, of Rimmer Avenue, Huyton, admitted threatening

No Real deal for Xabi yet

Liverpool have moved to quash rumours that an agreement has been reached with Real Madrid for Xabi Alonso after the Spanish midfielder was left out of the side that drew 1-1 with Thailand at the start of the club's pre-season tour of the Far East.

The 28-year-old took part in training today at Singapore's national stadium with the club insisting his none appearance against the Thais was due to an ankle problem and not to protect him from possible injury with a move to the Spanish capital imminent.
A Liverpool spokesman said: "Xabi is with us in Singapore, and will train with the rest of the squad. He was injured ahead of the Thailand game, people can say what they like about that.

"There has been no deal agreed with anyone for his transfer to anyone."
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has remained resolutely defiant in the face of ongoing speculation linking Alonso with a return to Spain this summer.
However, Liverpool's uncertain financial circumstances and Benitez's desire to rebuild to challenge Manchester United for the Premier League title have left Real confident that a bid of around £30 million would prove successful.
Alonso has made clear his desire to leave, and had hoped not to have to fly to Vienna on Sunday to meet up with the Liverpool squad ahead of the flight to the Far East.
Alonso did make the trip, and sources at Liverpool expect him to face Singapore on Sunday before the squad fly back to the UK the following day.
Alonso's departure, should it happen, would leave Benitez needing to replace him with names including Moussa Sissoko, Esteban Cambiasso, Alberto Aquilani, Javi Martine and even Real's own Wesley Sneijder having been mentioned.

Gerrard a professional boxer

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard lashed out at a man "with the style and speed of a professional boxer" after losing his cool in a bar brawl, a court heard.

The 29-year-old England midfielder is accused of being part of a group that injured businessman Marcus McGee, 34, at the Lounge Inn nightclub in Southport, near Liverpool in December last year.
Gerrard was celebrating Liverpool's 5-1 win at Newcastle United at the time. He denies the charge of affray. An initial charge of assault was dropped at a court hearing in March.
The row erupted after Gerrard asked McGee for a card controlling the CD player, saying: "Give me that, lad," the court heard.
"Mr. McGee took offence at his attitude and the expression 'lad' and he refused. Not many people on Merseyside, or indeed anywhere else, would refuse a request from Steven Gerrard but Mr. McGee did," said prosecutor David Turner.
Gerrard was left fuming by the exchange, and six minutes later came back over to Mr. McGee, swearing and squaring up to him "in the sort of hostile confrontation that is often seen between professional footballers."
"Steven Gerrard had clearly lost his cool: he was angry with Marcus McGee," said Turner.
Gerrard's friends came over to help, and one of them, John Doran, pushed McGee away and "could not resist following through with his right elbow into Mr McGee's face", said Turner.
"We say at this stage Gerrard totally lost it.
"Within seconds, Steven Gerrard joined in the attack with a succession of well aimed uppercut punches delivered with the style and speed of a professional boxer rather than a professional footballer."
Turner said the key question was whether Gerrard was acting in self-defence.
"Steven Gerrard is a world class footballer. He has the honour to be captain of Liverpool FC and to play for England. He is a star. He is Liverpool born and bred and here on Merseyside is a hero," he said.
"We do not say that Mr. Gerrard is normally an arrogant man, we don't say that he is a bully.
"What we do say is that that night he just lost his self control and joined in an attack which should never have taken place. He let himself down."
Gerrard is facing trial alone, after five co-defendants admitted affray, and one admitted a lesser charge of threatening behaviour.

Johnson very Confident & Positive about Liverpool

GLEN Johnson is aiming to reproduce the form that won him an England recall last season as he eyes Premier League glory with Liverpool.

Reds manager Rafael Benitez signed the full-back from Portsmouth for a reported £17million following an impressive season on the south coast that saw Fabio Capello restore him to the national team after an absence of almost three years.

Johnson made an encouraging debut in the recent pre-season friendly with St Gallen and his versatility may also prove a useful asset to Benitez, with the 24-year-old able to operate at right or left-back as well as in midfield.

“I just want to play with the consistency I did last year and, hopefully, with the attacking play and the defensive side that I’ve improved on,” he said.

“I’d just like to be doing that week in, week out again.

“They’re (Liverpool) right up there with the world’s best and they showed that by how close they came last season so a few minor errors that could be cut out and there will be massive improvements.

“It’s a whole different club, the organisation and the professionalism of all the staff makes a difference.”

Johnson is Benitez’s only major signing of the summer to date as he plots to go one better than last season’s runners-up finish in the Barclays Premier League.

Young on Rafa's Radar

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is launching a bid for Aston Villa winger Ashley Young.

Ashley Young is certainly a very good prospect as he is just 24 and he is english. He can be a huge success for Liverpool if the deal does go through.

The News of the World says the lure of a Premier League title challenge and Champions League action at Anfield will be tough for Young to resist, especially in a World Cup season.

Benitez and Martin O'Neill fought a bitter transfer war over Gareth Barry 12 months ago. The Villa boss frustrated Benitez on that occasion, when the Anfield board refused to meet the midfielder's £18m valuation.

This time Benitez can expect the funds to get his man, although Villa recently slapped a £30m price tag on the 24-year-old.

Liverpool can beat City's Millions insists Kuyt

Dirk Kuyt has said that Liverpool are not afraid of Manchester City's millions, despite the signings they continue to make.

Speaking after Liverpool's 0-0 draw with St. Gallen, where Kuyt captained the side during the second half, he expressed confidence that Liverpool would finish above City this season.

"They have bought some good players but we are comfortable with our squad and our players and we are comfortable that we can play better than Manchester City this season," the striker-cum-midfielder said.

"You see what is happening there and you do think, ‘When will they stop?’ We are looking at Manchester City and who they are buying.

"Every day it seems like it is a different player who is signing but we will see what happens in the season.

"Maybe they can come in the top four but we have to make sure we finish above them because we want to go one step higher after last season."

Kuyt then went on to laud Liverpool's only major signing of the summer so far, Glen Johnson.

"Unfortunately we didn’t win any trophies last season but if we can keep the team together then the fact we have added Glen Johnson means hopefully we can go one step higher," he said.

"I think Glen showed already that he is a very good player in the Premier League and England’s national team.

"When you bring someone like him in you know you are going to get quality."

Silva to replce Alonso at Liverpool

Can David Silva be the perfect man to replace Xabi Alonso at Anfield? Silva is no doubt a great talent. But Alonso has the experience of playing in the premier league and he has proved it last year.

It is a Mix-bag of feelings for all the Liverpool fans.Xabi Alonso was one of the Star Performers for Liverpool last season.

A deal between Liverpool and Real Madrid is likely to be concluded for Xabi Alonso later this week according to reports and the Daily Telegraph suggests the £30 million received for the 27-year-old will be outlaid on Valencia star David Silva, who has also attracted interest from Manchester United.

Real Madrid are reportedly unhappy about Liverpool’s lofty valuation, particularly given the player’s limited commercial appeal, but the Spanish clubs hierarchy realise they will simply have to meet the price or not sign him.

The money will be used to secure the long-term future of Javier Mascherano who is attracting strong interest from Barcelona. Liverpool are keen to offer the player an improved deal in order to retain his services.

The newspaper suggests Benitez will spend the rest of the money on Valencia midfielder David Silva. The Spaniard has attracted interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United but Benitez has been a long-time admirer of the player, and believes he would add additional creativity to Liverpool’s attack.
Liverpool’s interest may reignited Manchester United’s alleged desire to sign the player despite Sir Alex Ferguson recently claiming his spending was over.

Alonso wants to quit Liverpool

Xabi Alonso has made it clear to Rafa Benitez that he wants to quit Anfield and join the new galactico's era at the Santiago Bernebeu.

If Alonso joins Real Madrid he will be the Fifth big signing for Madrid with the likes of Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Raul Albiol already unvieled.

Alonso has stopped short of putting in an official written transfer request but he has made it clear to Benitez that his future lies in La Liga rather than the Premier League.

The 27-year-old is due to join up with his Liverpool team mates on Sunday after being given extended leave following his involvement in the Confederations Cup in South Africa but Alonso and his agent Inaki Ibanez are hopeful that a deal can be thrashed out with Real before then.

But with Real reluctant to spend more than £27m for the Spanish international and Benitez adamant that he will not allow Alonso to leave for that kind of figure, a compromise is some way off.

Alonso could try to force the issue by handing in an official transfer request but the midfielder believes that he deserves to be able to have his future sorted out without taking such formal measures after giving five years of service to the Reds. Real’s public pursuit of Alonso is now becoming incessant with recently appointed manager Manuel Pellegrini becoming the latest leading Bernabeu official to speak of his club’s desire to snap up the Liverpool man.

Rafa insists No More Big Money Transfers

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez does not expect to make any further signings for 'big, big money' after being linked with a bid for Franck Ribery.

Bayern Munich winger Ribery had been backed in to odds-on favouritism to join Liverpool following a summer of speculation over his future.

However, Benitez has seemingly ruled out a move for the France international, who has previously stated he would either stay at Bayern or join Real Madrid.

Having spent in the region of £17million to sign Glen Johnson from Portsmouth, Benitez is not planning any more major transfer deals.

"I will be really pleased if we can keep this squad together because I don't think we need to do too many things," said Benitez.

"I don't think we'll be signing anyone else for big, big money, just maybe the ones who can fit into our team.

"Right now we are just thinking of improving the fitness of the players, not thinking about the transfer market.

"We have the quality there and we will have our chances again."

Benitez's priority is trying to keep Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso at Anfield, with the midfield duo consistently linked with a move to Spain.

Rafa cools down Masch & Alonso Speculations , rants City this time

Rafael Benitez used the unveiling of defender Glen Johnson to attack Manchester City's "money, money, money" approach to transfers.

The Liverpool boss splashed £17million on the England right-back, but paid substantially less than that to Portsmouth, who still owed money on the transfer of Peter Crouch.

Benitez stressed Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano would not be leaving, but said he found the market increasingly "crazy" to negotiate given the big spending of Manchester City and Real Madrid.

He also admitted he moved again for Gareth Barry, but was pipped to the post by City.

Benitez said: "We had to pay big money, the market is now crazy. It is all money, money, money now. But we were signing a good player, an England player, and that is very positive. He has a good mentality, and when I spoke to him first it was clear he wanted to come here.

"Things have changed. You have to adapt to a situation. Manchester City and big clubs in Europe are spending big money, so the market has changed and we have to work harder. You have to do that to stay at the level we are at because of the big money being spent here and abroad.''

City also wanted Johnson, but Benitez said: "It was difficult, some clubs are offering big money. But he wanted to come here, that was the difference. We did go back again for Barry, but as I said. it is all about money, money, money. It is as simple as that.''

On City's influence on the market and their prospects for next term, Benitez added: "City have signed a lot of good players, but that is no guarantee they will win anything. But it will be interesting to see what happens next season. But whatever happens, experience is more important and we feel that we have that to be in the top positions.

"If you spend big it is always easier to perform well. But when you have a good understanding between players that is also important. If they are together, they work hard, that is just as important.''

Benitez has also had to contend with a summer of transfer speculation over Alonso, wanted by Real Madrid, and Mascherano, a target for European champions Barcelona.

But although it is believed both players are being swayed by the advances of the Spanish club, Benitez made it clear that he does not want to sell and would like some loyalty shown by the pair.

He said: "I do not think Alonso or Mascherano will go. It is clear that they both are under contract with long-term agreements. That is it. There has been a lot of things written, a lot of rumours, but both players are under contract and we have no more need to talk about things.

"They are both very good players and I will be very pleased to keep them. They both have very good contracts. We signed them both from different situations. Alonso was coming from Real Sociedad and nobody had really heard much of him outside of Spain, he did well and we renewed his contract because of that.

"Mascherano came from West Ham where he had not been doing well. We brought him here and gave him a good contract, so we are very pleased with them both and that Liverpool has been very good to them.''

Benitez also dismissed rumours that full back Fabio Aurelio will be out for six months with a knee injury. He said: "One, maybe two months, I expect him back by then. Certainly not six.''

Glen Johnson admits there was only Liverpool on his mind

Glen Johnson today revealed how Liverpool's reputation in world football meant no other club could compete for his signature.

The right-back was the subject of reported interest from other teams - but claims there was no contest once Rafa Benitez offered him the chance to join 'one of the biggest clubs in the world'.

"I had a spell at Chelsea before and there were good and bad times but when a club like Liverpool comes in for you it is not a hard decision," Johnson told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"It's a fantastic club - one of the biggest in the world. It's got a great history and I wanted to be a part of that.

"The hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you come to Anfield and hear You'll Never Walk Alone even when you don't play for Liverpool, so I cannot begin to imagine how it is going to feel when I put the kit on for the first time."

Johnson will be unveiled to the world's media on Thursday afternoon where he will reveal how his top priority in a Liverpool shirt will be helping the club win a first league title since 1990.

"We've got some fantastic players and I wanted to come here and help Liverpool win the league," added the 24-year-old.

"The boys did fantastically well last year. Hopefully we can now get a few more points and steal it from Manchester United.

"We want to go as far as we can in every competition but all the lads want to win the Premier League and that would be a great start."

Johnson was voted the Premier League's best right-back by the PFA last term but the England man insists there is even more to come.

"I can definitely improve - every player can. I want to improve every aspect of my game," he said.

"Rafa has told me he wants more of the same form I showed last year, but he also wants me to improve. We will be working hard together to do that.

"I am here to do my best."

Johnson reported to training at Melwood for the first time on Wednesday where he was introduced to his new teammates.

"Yesterday was my first day and all the lads and staff made me feel really welcome, so it's good times," he said.

"I knew Stevie and Carra from before but yesterday I met about 60 players! I was shaking the same hands about four times introducing myself! It's a lot to take in at once, and obviously the lads were messing about and laughing about that. But everyone's made me feel really welcome and it's great to be here."

Johnson also revealed how he spoke with former Reds Peter Crouch and Jermaine Pennant - both of whom he played alongside at Portsmouth last term - before signing at Anfield.

"Peter and Jermaine said it's a fantastic club but they didn't need to say that - I knew. They told me I'd enjoy every minute of it," he said.

The 29-year-old midfielder, who had two years remaining on his existing deal, agreed a two-year extension on Monday.

The Israel captain told official webiste: "I am very happy that we have reached an agreement. Of course, to be at a club like this is a dream come true and I want to keep playing here."

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said: "You know that our idea was to extend the contracts of some players and Yossi was one of these players."
"He has been really good for us over the last year, scoring crucial goals and getting assists, so we wanted to keep him and I'm really pleased with the extension."

King Praises the Superstar

New Liverpool academy advisor Kenny Dalglish has stated that he has been very impressed with the impact striker Fernando Torres has had on the club.

The Anfield legend, who returned to the club yesterday, feels that Torres has taken the Reds to a new level, and has said that the Spaniard is now an invaluable member of the squad.

Speaking to Liverpool's official website, Dalglish said, "Fernando has been invaluable to Liverpool Football Club in the two years he's been here and he has made a massive contribution, both in terms of the number of goals he's scored and his sheer presence on the pitch.

"A lot of people stood up and took notice when he scored his first goal for the club against Chelsea at Anfield because he took it so brilliantly.

"If people hadn't already taken him seriously, they certainly did from that moment on.

"He's since scored some spectacular goals, but it is his clinicalness that I like - his goal against Blackburn earlier this year was fantastic.

"Torres is a real threat that opponents don't like coming up against and Fernando can be more than delighted with what he's achieved since he came here because he's certainly made a profuse contribution."

Dalglish also feels that Torres can be the man to take the club to the next level and win the Premier League trophy for the first time in their history.

"There is a real determination at Anfield for the club to be as successful as they possibly can," he continued.

"I'm sure he would not have agreed a new long-term contract if he didn't believe the club were moving in the right direction.

"Last season was a bit of a stop-start one for Fernando. It was a long season and he obviously picked up some injuries along the way.

"At times, Rafa had to even leave him out or take him off early in games to try and protect him, but although last campaign was difficult, he will have benefited from that experience and he'll be ready for this season.

"He's very happy here, which is great, and it's a real bonus that we've got him in our side."

Torres has been at Anfield for just two years, and has already settled into life in England, scoring 38 goals in just 57 league appearances.

Pepe Blasts Liverpool Targets for Opting for More Money

PEPE REINA has hit out at Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez for snubbing Liverpool and opting for the riches on offer at Manchester City.

The Spanish keeper was a key part of the Reds side that finished just four points below Manchester United in the club's best Premier League season for years.

But instead of adding to the squad over the summer, Reina has so far seen two transfer targets turn down the chance of a move to Anfield and could also see team-mates like Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano leave Liverpool in search of moves abroad.

Barry looked a certainty to arrive on Merseyside in the close season after missing out on a move from Aston Villa 12 months ago.

But City seized the opportunity to snatch the player by offering him £120,000 a week before Liverpool had a chance to put in place the finance to sign him.

Tevez has been offered £140,000 a week to move to Eastlands after failing to agree a deal to extend his career at Old Trafford.

Liverpool also thought they were in pole position to land the Argentine by offering him Champions League football. Instead, the pair look to have chosen the money available at City. And Reina believes they should have prioritised their prospects of achievement above their wages.

He said: "Apparently, they moved for the money. That is their decision but I also think it is their problem if they cannot see that Liverpool is a bigger club.

"It's up to them what they do but let me tell them that I am very proud to play for Liverpool. We can offer European football and I think that should have been a consideration for them.

"Everybody knows what it is to play for Liverpool. It's a pleasure and a tremendous honour. I am surprised they didn't consider these things. Some things in a player's career should be more important than money."

Liverpool's latest balance sheet shows why they appear unable to offer anywhere near the kind of lucrative wages City are tempting players with at present.

Figures announced last month showed that joint owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks are struggling to service the £350million loan they took out to buy the club.

Kop Holdings, the parent company that owns Liverpool, lost nearly £43m last year and backers RBS have moved to assure fans that their club is safe.

As it stands, manager Rafa Benitez is having to sell players before he can strengthen his side.

Even so, Reina, 26, insists Liverpool will be strong enough come the start of the season.

He said: "At Liverpool, you have to be fighting for the title and that's what we will be doing this year.

"We are involved in four competitions and just targeting one of them is not enough. The big one of the Premier League would definitely be best."

Liverpool to Offer Pay Rise to Masch to end Barca Interest

Liverpool have reportedly offered Javier Mascherano a pay-rise to end Barcelona Interest on the Defensive Mid-fielder.

Javier Mascherano’s wages were far below the level given to other Liverpool stars, which is causing his unrest at the club, so it seems that the Anfield club have decided to offer him £90,000 a week to persuade him to stay.

BARCELONA coach Pep Guardiola has told the club to go ahead with the pursuit of midfielder Javier Mascherano even though Yaya Toure has signed a new deal.
The Spanish giants still believe they can grab Mascherano, 25, despite Liverpool offering to up the Argentinian’s wages to £90,000 a week in a desperate attempt to keep him.
Toure’s contract extension looked to have ended Barca’s interest but Guardiola wants to use the Ivory Coast star in the central defensive role he occupied at times last season.
His versatility has persuaded Guardiola the club could accommodate another holding midfielder and the Barca coach is a big fan of £25m-rated Mascherano.
But the Spanish champs know Liverpool are unlikely to let both Mascherano and Real Madrid target Xabi Alonso go.
So if Alonso stays, expect Barca to crank up their Mascherano chase.
